Every flooring contractor in the Mr. Remodel network must carry a valid state license and insurance. However, we may not re-verify credentials annually, so we strongly recommend confirming your contractor’s current licensing and insurance status before any work begins.
Licensing: In many states (e.g., California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon), flooring installation is considered a specialty trade, so contractors must hold a state-issued license (often under “flooring and floor covering” or a general contractor classification). In some states, licensing requirements are looser. For example, certain states only require a license if the project exceeds a dollar threshold (e.g., $500, $1,000, or $5,000 in labor/materials). Smaller flooring jobs may not legally require a license there. Some states don’t have statewide contractor licensing, but cities or counties may require local registration or permits.
Insurance: General liability insurance is standard and strongly recommended, even if not legally mandated. Most reputable flooring contractors also carry workers’ compensation insurance if they have employees. Some states require proof of insurance before a license is issued.
